The Europas Awards in Video!

The Europas Awards were a blast, but more than that, they were the combination of expert judges and thousands of public votes to find the best startups in Europe.

And now we present to you a flavour of the crazy awards ceremony in London where we celebrated European tech in full-blown European style, featuring the Mayor of London and a host of European tech startup celebrities.

The videos below were produced by Key One Productions (the awards themselves cut down to 29 minutes) and a short flavour of the awards from Newspepper, a news report from Reuters TV and really super report by DareToAsk TV (see bottom) which includes some great interviews. Enjoy!

PeerIndex wins The Grand Prix as The Europas Awards drifts Eastwards

The Europas, the annual European Tech Startup Awards, ended last night with a triumphant win by PeerIndex the social ranking service, which clinched the Grand Prix award. The result was based on both public online voting and expert judges, recognising the startup’s significant market traction against a much larger competitor, with less resources and a clear path towards both a big consumer and business market. VC DFJ Esprit offered a £50,000 convertible loan note to the Grand Prix winner on the night.

After 22 expert judges picked their favourites from 400 entries, and those results where combined with approximately 40,000 public votes from the tech startup industry, clear trends started to emerge from those marked out as Winners and those Highly Commended in the awards.

While London once again held it’s own as a crucible of tech startup innovation in Europe, with Conversocial, Pusher, OneFineStay and Mixcloud among those taking honours, there was a marked drift Eastward and North in Europe, as startups from Berlin (Amen, EyeEm, 6Wunderkinder) and Belgrade (Nordeus) won their category or were Highly Commended, while companies from Copenhagen (Podio), Stockholm (iZettle) and Helsinki (Rovio, AngryBirds) showed that European innovation remains strong even in smaller countries. Bucking that trend to the North was Busuu from Madrid which won the Education category, showing that tech entrepreneurship is alive and well across the breadth of Europe.

A packed crowd of almost 500 people started their evening with a short welcome video recorded by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who encouraged startups to set up operations in the city.

Speaking personally, I think it’s now beyond doubt that European tech startups can punch out to a global market directly from a European base. While Silicon Valley remains the leviathan of the industry, tech startups from Belfast to Belgrade, London to Ljubijana, are grabbing the opportunity to reach global markets with world beating products and services.

The Europas, the European Tech Startup Awards, will be held this Thursday, November 17, in London. As of today we are poised to sell out (there are just a handful left). And unfortunately you can’t buy tickets on the door. Boo hoo. But over 400 of you are coming already. Yay!

The Europas will take take place at a ridiculously cool London venue in the heart of London’s West End. There has been a huge response from the community. There was a month-long submission process. Over 40,000 votes were cast inside a week for people’s favourite early stage startups of the year. You can see the finalists here. And the esteemed Advisory Board also voted for their picks. The results were combined to find the best companies.

The Europas Grand Prix Winner to be offered £50,000 convertible note

It’s our pleasure to announce that pan-European VC DFJ Esprit is to offer a £50,000 convertible loan to the Grand Prix winner of The Europas Tech Startup Awards.

The loan (often called a convertible note) will convert into equity at the startup’s next funding round on the same terms as the new investor (i.e. no discount) and will not be interest bearing. The loan will be ‘plain vanilla’ in all other respects (i.e. no additional rights). The winner will have a week to decide whether to take the loan or not.

It’s just another sign the European tech scene has never looked better. See you on the night in London, November 17!

We’re delighted to announce the members of The Europas Awards Advisory Board. These are people who know the pan-European tech scene very well indeed. But just as importantly, it also represents a number of key European VCs and journalists who will now have to look at your entries!

How To Enter The Europas

The Europas, the European Tech Startup Awards supported by TechCrunch Europe, will be on November 17 in London. 450 of Europe’s top startups, VCs and entrepreneurs will celebrate the European startup scene with 20 awards after taking hundreds of entries, sifting with an advisory board, putting the finalists to a public vote by the industry and merging the results.

You can still buy tickets, follow the event on Twitter @TheEuropas and on Facebook. But you only have three days left (Friday 7 October is the deadline) to enter yourself or your startup. Here’s how.

To enter The Europas your startup’s product must have been launched within the last 2 years (from September 2009, the business can be older). If your startup has received external funding, then it can ONLY be a Seed or Series A round of funding. Startups that have taken Series B rounds and beyond are NOT eligible to enter. Entrants can come from the “EMEA” region (Europe, Middle East and Africa).

Where you are nominating an individual (e.g. Best Startup Founder / Co-Founders of the Year) simply make sure you add the right information. For example with the Founder category make sure you enter “Who is in your current team?”

For instance, to enter Best Startup Founder / Co-Founders just add “Startup Founder nomination” to the required fields where you are asked for more information. To enter Best Service Provider to Startups, just select the correct category and add “Service Provider nomination” to required fields. And so on.

The Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 17 at the Carbon Bar in London’s West End.

The Europas, the European Tech Startup Awards, were held for the second time December 2010, in London, supported by TechCrunch Europe. It was the culmination of a month of online voting by the European tech startup industry for the finalists, where some 33,126 votes were cast, judges deliberated over the results and over 350 people joined the cream of Europe’s startups, VCs and entrepreneurs at a huge awards event. This year it’s getting bigger to get the community even more involved, create an even bigger event, and find the best startups in Europe. You can enter here and tickets are here. The Europas will be identifying the hottest tech startups in Europe right now, taking hundreds of entries, sifting through them with a large advisory board and then submitting the picks to a public vote which the entire industry can participate in. The Europas, the European Startup Awards, were last held in London in December 2010, the second awards ever. It was the culmination of a month of online voting by the European tech startup industry for the finalists, where some 33,126 votes were cast across 23 categories, eight judges deliberated over the results and over 350 people joined the cream of Europe’s startups, VCs and entrepreneurs on the 31st story of stunning venue with amazing views over central London.
